Inspired by themes of my recent body of work, Day In & Day Out, I invite community members to join me in a day of creating abstract sculptural forms from repurposed textiles! For this workshop, we will be using the skills of cutting, pinning, shaping, and hand sewing (previous experience not required).
Themes explored (but not limited to): identity, gender, family structures, domesticity, private verses public space, softness, materiality, binaries, abstraction, and more!
Material ideas (old/repurposed textiles): quilts, blankets, linens, tablecloths, curtains, clothing, anything soft and sewable!
What will we do? Cloth to Form! We will spend time deconstructing our textile pieces and reconstructing them into abstract sculptural forms (free standing, wall bound…any form is welcome!). Through the artmaking processes, we will metaphorically deconstruct how preconceived ideas, narratives, and structures impact our everyday lives.
Free! Thanks to the generous support of the Kentucky Foundation for Women, this workshop is entirely free for participants. All materials will be provided but participants are encouraged to bring their own preferred repurposed textiles!
Need help obtaining textiles? Participants are invited to join Colleen for a trip to Lex Center for Creative Reuse to obtain materials (all expenses paid by Colleen). Just make sure to select that option on the registration form and Colleen will contact you to set up a date and time! I’d love for some of us to go as a group!
What will you finish by the end of the workshop? You may not entirely finish your sculpture by the end of the workshop but we will lay the foundation for the skill-based and conceptual-based strategies you would need for your finished piece. There will also be the opportunity to exhibit your work after it is complete! We will discuss more details regarding show our pieces during the workshop (not required!).
Registration is limited and first come first serve!
